Deze aluminium legering is een thermisch niet-hardbare legering. Verhoging van de sterkte is alleen mogelijk door kouddeformatie, waarbij met deze legering, binnen de groep van thermisch niet-hardbare legeringen, de hoogste waarden bereikbaar zijn. In zachte toestand combineert het materiaal een redelijke sterkte (mengkristalharding) met een redelijke vervormbaarheid. Verdere verhoging van de sterkte is alleen mogelijk door kouddeformatie (versteviging, conditie Hxx), hetgeen gepaard gaat met een afname van de rek en dus van de vervormbaarheid, waarbij de conditie H2x iets betere vervormingseigenschappen heeft dan de conditie H1x. Het materiaal kan na een thermische behandeling (lassen) of na langdurig gebruik op een temperatuur boven 650°C gevoelig worden voor interkristallijne corrosie. Onder "normale" atmosferische omstandigheden en ook in wat agressievere omgevingen zoals maritieme milieus heeft de kwalitiet EN AW-5083 een uitstekende weerstand tegen corrosie, die nog verbeterd kan worden door anodiseren. Wordt deze kwaliteit in de condities H1x of H2x gelast, dan moet rekening worden gehouden met een daling van de sterkte in de warmtebeïnvloede zone tot het niveau van de zachtgegloeide toestand. Toepassingen zijn onder andere te vinden in de apparatenbouw (drukvaten, cyrogene toepassingen), chemische industrie (opslagtanks) en transportmiddelen.
